Jack C. "PawPaw" Acrey – Obituary and Assessment Call

Jack C. "PawPaw" Acrey passed away at his home in Carlsbad, NM on Friday, May 13th. Services will be held on Friday, May 20th at 2:00 p.m. in the Pennington Funeral Home Chapel in San Marcos, TX, with Pastor Roxanne Alexander officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, May 19th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Pennington Funeral Home. Pall bearers will be grandsons Sam Meeks, Matt Meeks, Mike Meeks, Donnie Woodmansee, Rowdy Lundegreen and great-grandson Geoffrey Meeks.

Jack was born on March 26, 1929 in Coleman County, TX to Claude Ray and Fannie Mae Akins Acrey. He worked for Hoffman & Acrey Construction Co. before being drafted on October 11, 1950. He served two years in the Army where he was on the front lines in Korea as a demolition expert. He received the Korean Service Medal with 1/Bronze Service Medal, Army Occ. Medal (Japan), Combat Infantry Badge and the UN Service Medal. Upon returning to the states, he met and married the love of his life Ola Inez Saunders Meeks. He worked for the Texas Game and Fish Commission (later Texas Parks & Wildlife) as a Game Warden, then with the Wildlife Exhibit and retired in 1991 with the State Fish Hatchery in San Marcos. Jack was an avid coyote hunter and they enjoyed many trips to annual wolf (coyote) meets in Gillette and Henrietta, Texas. They were members of the South Texas Wolf Hunters Assoc. and the Texas/Oklahoma Wolf Hunters Assoc. He raised Walker hounds and many of them were named after their grandchildren.

After retiring, they moved to Eldorado, OK and in 2001 moved to Carlsbad, NM. Mr. Acrey has a history with ancestors from Southeastern New Mexico as noted in the book "Ghosts of the Guadalupes".

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years; sister Carrie Bell (Acrey) Pirtle; brother Ace Tatum Acrey; and granddaughters Melissa Meeks and Valerie Meeks.

He is survived by his children Dennis (Carol) Meeks of Angleton, TX; David (Gerri) Meeks of Carlsbad, NM; Steve (Cindy) Meeks of Wimberley, TX; Mollie Meeks (Russ) Troutman of Saguache, CO; Scott (Nancy) Meeks of San Marcos, TX; and Susan Acrey(Gary) Roper of Carlsbad, NM; grandchildren Brian Meeks of Austin, TX; Mark Meeks of Angleton, TX; Terri Lynn Meeks (Anthony) Poole of Wales, UK; Sam (Cindy) Meeks of Carlsbad, NM; Amanda Meeks of Carlsbad, NM; Matt (Natalie) Meeks of Wimberley, TX; Mike (Brittany) Meeks of Wimberley, TX; Lolly Meeks (Rowdy) Lundegreen of New Braunfels, TX; Donnie (Jen) Woodmansee of Fort Collins, CO; Kelli Meeks (Brian Gomez) of San Marcos, TX; Kristin Meeks of San Marcos, TX; Wendy (Chris) Tavarez of Carlsbad, NM; Jennifer Roper of Carlsbad, NM and 18 great-grandchildren; sister Patsy (Acrey) Evans of Carlsbad, NM; brothers Glen Acrey of Fairfield, CA; Raymond Acrey, of Clovis, NM; Bill Acrey, of Dove Creek, CO; and Robert Acrey of Pueblo, CO.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lakeview Hospice, 1300 N. Canal, Carlsbad, NM 88220, the Salvation Army, or charity of choice.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Mutual Association (TPWD Mutual Association) regrets to inform you of the death of another of our members, Jack C. "PawPaw" Acrey .

Jack became a member of the Texas Game and Fish Commission Mutual Association, later know as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Mutual Association, on August 17, 1956. He retained his membership up until his death on May 13, 2011.

Additional information on Mr. Acrey is on the reverse side of this assessment letter.

A check in the amount of $5,385.00 will be delivered to his family as soon as possible..

An assessment in the amount of $16.00 will be necessary to bring the policy fund back into balance to have payments on hand for two members in case of death. Please make this payment by July 5, 2011.
