Commission Agenda Item No. 11
Presenter: Chris Holmes
January 26, 2012
I. Executive Summary: Staff will provide the Commission with an overview of the Interpretive Services program in the State Parks Division. The program’s purpose and goals will be explained as well as an outline of new programs and products the team plans to implement. The briefing will include an update on the Texas Outdoor Family program, and examples of interpretive waysides and exhibits.
II. Discussion: When most people hear the word interpretation, they think of someone who translates the meaning of one language into another. In a park setting, interpretation "translates" the meanings of artifacts, collections, events, and physical/cultural resources into a language that helps visitors understand these resources.
Interpretive Services provides expertise and support to State Park Division staff in order to create interpretive experiences for the public so that they can better appreciate, respect and preserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas State Parks. It is field and Austin HQ based and its programs include:
- Buffalo Soldier Heritage & Outreach Program
- Curatorial Services
- Exhibit Shop
- Interpretive Planning & Development
- Outdoor Education Program
- Regional Interpretive Specialists
