Action
Land Acquisition – Presidio County
Chinati Mountains State Natural Area
March 27, 2014

I.       Executive Summary:  Texas Parks and Wildlife Department staff (TPWD) has negotiated the acquisition of approximately 960 acres of land as an addition to the Chinati Mountains State Natural Area (CMSNA).

II.      Discussion:  In April 1996 TPWD accepted the donation of 37,885 acres of land to form Chinati Mountains State Natural Area.

The Chinati Mountains are the fourth largest mountain range within the state, preceded by the Guadalupe, Davis and Chinos Mountains. The Chinati Mountains consist of dry desert land, and beautiful green canyons. Granite Bluffs along with craggy peaks tower over the park lands. Their elevations range from 4,605 to 7,728 feet above sea level.

Access to this 37,885 acre tract (Tract) is limited to TPWD staff and to the public only when accompanied by TPWD staff. Acquisition of this Tract will not only add approximately 960 acres to CMSNA but also provide public access.

III.    Recommendation:  The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire approximately 960 acres in Presidio County for addition to Chinati Mountains State Natural Area.”
