If you suddenly found yourself in an unexpected extended stay in the wilderness, would you know how to survive? With the advent of smart phone and GPS navigation, popularized survival entertainment programs and a wide array of survival fallacies on the internet, the number of backcountry emergencies is on the rise. Don't become the next victim – arm yourself with knowledge.
This workshop will address the essentials of planning, preparing, prioritizing, decision-making and lost-proofing for a front country or backcountry trip.
Topics will include:
- How to orient yourself using the sun and stars; and read and navigate using a topo map and compass
- Locate, procure and purify water; and ID and prepare common wild edible and medicinal plants
- Build an effective emergency shelter; start & maintain a fire; signal for help; recognize and handle medical emergencies in the backcountry.
Wilderness professionals will share their knowledge and expertise through hands-on activities and skill builders. Whether they come in handy in your own backyard or wind up saving lives in the backcountry, honing your wilderness skills is always a good idea.
Pre-registration required. Fee: $90.00 will cover lodging (bunkhouse cabins) & entrance fees and most meals. For more information or to register, contact Dawn Bello.
