One happy camper in the rain
Submitted by Kathy Sartor
Recently I camped at Fort Parker State Park with a friend. We are regular campers there as we live in the near area. We have one shelter we prefer (Shelter 2) due to the view of the lake and access to the fishing pier.
We wanted to beat the spring breakers, so we went for a Thursday and Friday camping spree! The first day, the weather could not have been better. We enjoyed plenty of sunshine, cooked our entire meal with cast iron and coals, fished, walked, and napped. The second day, it was cloudy and sprinkled rain on and off most of the day. HOWEVER, that did not deter us!!! We enjoyed a short hike before deciding to return to camp and nurse the fire.
Determined to make the most of the day and enjoy the rest of our camping experience, I grabbed an umbrella, sat by the fire and read a novel by one of my favorite authors. With Fort Parker Lake as my view, the sound of ducks, the occasional rain drop hitting my arm, what more could one ask for? It's like the song says, "And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance..."
This "parks girl" was truly one happy camper. I have visited/camped at 9 state parks/natural areas since my recent retirement.
