drawing of a cottonmouth snake
The Cottonmouth(or Water moccasin), Agkistrodon piscivorous, is the
only water snake in Texas that is venomous. Though they are much maligned,
they are very important members of the aquatic community. Cottonmouths
eat mostly fish and frogs but will take other small mammals and birds.

It should be remembered that snakes fill very special roles in our ecosystem.
The majority are totally harmless. Moreover, they help control rodents and other
pest species and perform other exceedingly important ecological services.
