Frequently Asked Questions

Nongame Wildlife

I have a bird (typically a mockingbird or cardinal) that keeps tapping on my window. What's going on?

In the springtime, birds vigorously defend their territories. They are protecting their hard-won feeding and mating opportunities from interlopers. The bird only sees another bird, and doesn't recognize his own reflection - so he tries to fight or intimidate the invader. Try to break up the reflection with tape, screen, an outside plant, or soap on the window. This typically happens for only a short time in the spring.
