The Red Drum (aka redfish)

Redfish

Species: The Red Drum (aka redfish)

Trivia tidbit: The red drum, locally known as redfish, is considered by anglers as one of the most popular saltwater fish to pursue. It is usually caught in the bays, but very large fish can be caught in the Gulf from September through December. The most distinguishing characteristic of the red fish is a large black spot near the base of its tail. Typically they have only one spot, but fish with over one hundred have been found.

State Parks to Visit:
Sea Rim State Park, Galveston Island State Park, Goose Island State Park, Mustang Island State Park, and the lower Laguna Madre in the vicinity of the Port Isabel Lighthouse are excellent areas to catch redfish. This is an excellent sport fish as it has good fighting characteristics and can be caught on live bait or artificial lures.
