Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites Receive $50,000 Donation
AUSTIN – Thanks to a generous donation, the museum at Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites is about to get an upgrade.
At Thursday’s Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission meeting, the Friends of Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites donated $50,000 to the park. The donation will fund renovations and improvements of the site’s museum, which describes the storied history of the surrounding area.
The museum especially focuses on the story of the Mier Expedition members entombed at Monument Hill. The expedition members were part of a Texian militia operation launched in November 1842 against the Mexican Army. The four-month confrontation included a major battle at Ciudad Mier in Mexico. The militia launched the operation in retaliation for the Dawson Massacre earlier that year, in which the Mexican Army killed 36 Texans. The Texian militia, outnumbered by more than 2,000 Mexican soldiers, lost the battle.
The museum also describes the history of the Kreische family and their brewery, which was added to the area as part of a 36-acre donation in 1977, six years before the park officially opened in 1983.
The Friends group is one of the longest serving partners of Texas State Parks, supporting Monument Hill for nearly three decades by providing volunteer tour guides and assistance with both special events and daily operations.
