TPWD News Release — Sept. 5, 2012
SAN ANTONIO – Texans looking to experience the beauty and adventure of the Texas Hill Country will find greater opportunity to enjoy the outdoors by camping out at Government Canyon State Natural Area in west Bexar County, beginning this fall.
For the first time since it opened in 2005, Government Canyon State Natural Area will allow overnight camping in its front country, walk-in tent campground beginning Friday, Oct. 5.
Nature enthusiasts, scouting groups and families will be able to enjoy an evening of star-gazing, learning about nature during evening ranger programs and telling stories around a campfire (unless the site is under a burn ban).
“We are excited about opening camping for the citizens of San Antonio and beyond,” says Chris Holm, Government Canyon’s superintendent. “Despite the many budget and staffing challenges we faced and are still facing, we moved forward with campground development by constructing two host sites for campground volunteers, who can help run the campground. Those host sites are slated to be completed by the end of this year but we wanted our visitors to be able to take advantage of the wonderful fall weather that this area offers.”
The campground will be open Friday and Saturday nights only, and will offer 23 walk-in campsites and 2 walk-in group campsites for tent campers only. Vehicle parking spaces will be located nearby, with pedestrian trails leading to each site. Water faucets and two self-composting toilets will be centrally located throughout the campground. Campsites will cost $18 per night, plus the standard per-person entrance fee of $6 (entrance fee waived with valid Texas State Parks Pass).
Holm says the campground will offer a unique and more rustic camping experience for our visitors and blends perfectly with the mission and purpose of our State Natural Area. “Having this type of primitive campground in such close proximity to a major metropolitan area is a real treasure,” he says.
