Low water levels at Pauline Reservoir prevented surveys with trap nets and electrofishing in 2004 and gill nets in 2005. This report summarizes the general history of the reservoir.
Pauline Reservoir is a 600 acre impoundment located five miles east of Quanah in Hardeman County, Texas. The reservoir was created in 1910 by impounding Wanderers Creek, a tributary of the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. It was totally renovated in 1963. It is owned and operated by West Texas Utilities Company to provide cooling water for its power generating facility and for recreation. The reservoir is relatively shallow and has experienced heavy siltation. The area has experienced an extended drought from about April 1998 through May 2004. Recent rains have not been enough to refill the reservoir to allow boat access. Angler and boat access is adequate when water levels are at normal pool. There are no handicap specific facilities. Habitat consisted primarily of nondescript shorelines with sparse areas of native emergent and flooded terrestrial vegetation. The reservoir experienced a severe Prymnesium parvum kill in spring 2005.
The reservoir will be restocked to re-establish populations of sport species when water levels increase to sufficient levels. Stocking of palmetto bass will be discontinued due to limited angler access and use of the species.
Status of Management Actions from 2001
Issue 1: Palmetto bass stocking is needed to maintain an adequate abundance of this non-reproducing species. The current stocking regime of 10 fish/acre/year has resulted in fish having lower than desired condition indices.
Management Strategies: Stock palmetto bass fingerlings at 5 fish/acre every other year.
Action: Inapplicable due to recent P. parvum kill. Stocking of palmetto bass will be re-evaluated when the reservoir regains adequate water levels.
