Staff requests authorization to acquire an 800-acre parcel that is adjacent to the Justin Hurst (Peach Point) Wildlife Management Area (WMA). This tract is available from a willing seller and would add operational utility and provide additional recreational opportunities to the WMA and would further protect the habitat of the coastal prairie landscape.
Commission Agenda Item No. 5 Presenter: Stan David
Action Land Acquisition – Brazoria County Approximately 800 Acres at the Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area November 5, 2026
I. Executive Summary: Staff requests authorization to acquire an 800-acre parcel that is adjacent to the Justin Hurst (Peach Point) Wildlife Management Area (WMA). This tract is available from a willing seller and would add operational utility and provide additional recreational opportunities to the WMA and would further protect the habitat of the coastal prairie landscape.
II. Discussion: The Justin Hurst WMA consists of 14,771 acres of coastal prairies, bottomland hardwoods, and marshes and serves as a significant habitat for a number of resident and migratory species, including waterfowl and wading birds. It is bordered on the north by the Village of Jones Creek, on the east by Port of Freeport lands, and on the south by the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
The Coastal Prairie Conservancy (CPC) has identified an 800-acre tract adjacent to the WMA that is available from a willing seller. The current plan is for CPC to purchase the property and then donate it to TPWD. The additional acreage will protect habitat for a variety of species of migratory and resident wildlife. It will also provide additional hunting locations for the WMA.
III. Recommendation: Staff recommends that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:
“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire from a willing seller approximately 800 acres at the Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area.”
