First Day Hike : West Rim Overlook

10:00a to 5:00p
Fri, January 01, 2016
Autumn Seifried
(432) 358-4444

If you are spending the holidays at Big Bend Ranch State Park near the Sauceda Headquarters, take a hike with us to view Fresno Canyon and the Solitario Flatirons from the West Rim Overlook. This easy-to-moderate, 2.5 mile trail (5 miles round trip) traverses quartz-studded lava flows and dips through a hidden spring.

The majority of the West Rim Overlook trail is comprised of well-marked single-track with exposed rock surfaces for easy footing. From the Puerta Chilicote parking area, there is little increase in elevation except for one arroyo to cross before the Overlook. Our goal will be lunch at the Overlook, but we may choose to stop at multiple points with a view instead. Our return will be along the same path but with a detour to Ojo Chilicote to appreciate the water features and to consider the past of those who visited this area before us.

We will meet at the Sauceda Ranger Station at 10:00 am and carpool through the Llano to the Puerta Chilicote Trailhead. The Visitor Center is located approximately 27 miles from the turnoff at Casa Piedra Road along Highway 170. Please note that the road turns to dirt at Casa Piedra.

This hike is expected to take four to six hours and is most suitable for ages 10 and up. Pets are not allowed. Contact the Sauceda Ranger Station for additional information or to reserve your spot.
