Canoeing 101

Come learn the basics of canoeing at Buescher State Park! A cool way to have fun under the Texas sun!

Meet at the Canoe Barn at 8:30am in Buescher State Park (15 minute drive from Highway 71 or 35 minute scenic drive on Park Road 1C from Bastrop State Park)

8:30 - 9:00 : We will have a safety orientation, get fitted for life vests, and get familiar with our paddles.

9:00 - 9:40 : We will go over how to safely enter and exit a canoe, then get in the water and practice different strokes to use for paddling.  We will play a game to test our new skills and have short time for some adventuring.  At 9:40 - We will be back at the shore.

9:40 - 10:00 - We will practice exiting the canoe, putting the canoe away safely, and put our safety equipment back.

 

Limited canoe's available.  Get your spot in a canoe by emailing madalyn.miller@tpwd.texas.gov

Bring: Shoes you can get wet that offer some protection (Closed toe is preferred.  Flip flops are not allowed.), plenty of bottled water, wear clothes that can dry quickly if they get wet, sunscreen, hat.

All materials will be provided.

Program is free after park entrance fee is paid.  *Headquarters does not open until 8am, you will need to be at the Canoe Barn by 8:30 sharp.  Please pay for your day pass ahead of time online or plan your time accordingly to make a stop in headquarters before arriving at the canoe barn.  Day pass papers will be checked before program begins. *

You will be able to rent a canoe after the program from Buescher State Park Headquarters for $10 an hour.
