Sky Island Sunset Hike
Sun, September 27, 2026
Evenings are a great time to discover the magic of life on a sky island.
Did you know you are visiting a sky island? This refers to an elevated area surrounded by desert. The Davis Mountains sit within the Chihuahuan Desert, the biggest in North America. The park sits at 5,000-5,700 feet in elevation. Desert scrub, grasslands, and mixed hardwoods all live alongside each other in this ecoregion overlap.
On this easy walk, you will learn more about the sky island effect while enjoying our amazing sunsets. Park host Carol will lead you on this 1-mile walk along Skyline Drive Trail.
Meet: at CCC Rock Lookout (far end of Skyline Drive)
Bring: walking shoes, water, hat
Cost: free for campers, Indian Lodge guests, or day users w/ permit - daily entrance fee is $6.00/adult, or free for the carload with Texas State Park Pass.
