Beginning Fly Fishing Class with Optional Instructor Certification

Beginning Fly Fishing class for youth (ages 12 and up) and adults.

Beginners Clinic - 10 am to 2pm: This fun, hands-on workshop is for beginners or novices. Topics will include fly casting, fly tying, knots, regulations, fish I.D., safety and ethics. For adults or youth ages 12 and up (youth must be accompanied by an adult - no drop offs).

Dress appropriately for the weather and outdoor activities (hat, sunglasses and sunscreen recommended.) Bring a water bottle and sack lunch or snacks. 

The workshop is FREE and taught by TPWD Certified Angler Education Instructors. All equipment is provided or bring your own. Preregistration is requested, contact Richard Johnson.

Optional TPWD Instructor Certification: Adults who want to become certified Fly Fishing Instructors must attend both the Beginners clinic ( 10 am to 2 pm) and the Instructor certification section (2 pm to 3 pm); and create a TPWD Volunteer profile (see below for instructions.)


If you want be become a TPWD Certified Instructor, please create a TPWD Volunteer profile BEFORE the workshop:

Step 1: If you are not a current registered TPWD Volunteer go to and complete steps A - C.
(Skip to step 2 if you are a current TPWD volunteer or Texas Master Naturalist):

  1. Click on "Find an Opportunity" on the top menu bar, then use the "Search by Keyword," enter: Angler Education Instructor
  2. From the list, select the Opportunity, Angler Education Instructor Training Pending - statewide". Select "Click her for details or to sign up" link. On the next screen click on the blue Sign-up button. You will be prompted to create your TPWD Volunteer profile.
  3. Please remember to authorize and complete the Criminal Background Check section. All fields must be completed including your date of birth and Driver’s License number.

Step 2: Call or email the workshop leader with your TPWD Volunteer User ID, first and last name, and contact info. The workshop leader is Richard Johsnon, TPWD Volunteer Area Chief Trainer.
