Star Party in the Badlands

Join us at the West Contrabando Trailhead for a holiday star party in the badlands region of our park!

In this 2 hour program we will explore the far out reaches of the universe, share stories behind your favorite constellations, and enjoy unparalleled views of the darkest skies in Texas!

Did you know? Big Bend Ranch State Park is a gold-tier International Dark Sky Park. 

What to expect: Orientation, star and planet gazing, constellation identification, and stories of the night sky. 

6:45 PM - Check In - Arrive Early to be assigned a group!

7:00 PM - Program begins 

9:00 PM - Event ends

Meet: West Contrabando Trailhead. Located 8 miles from Barton Warnock Visitor Center and 41 miles from Fort Leaton State Historic Site. A park ranger will direct you to the star viewing area.

Bring flashlights, but please do not use them after the Star Party has begun. Red lights are permitted for limited use. The longer you let your eyes adjust the more stars you will see!

Dress in layers; desert temperatures get cool in the evenings, especially after dark. 

Fees: Adults 13 and older, $5; Children age 12 and under, free admission. Park admission is free with a Texas Parks Pass.
