Enjoy a night of stargazing at our International Dark Sky park during the holidays!

The constellations have guided indigenous peoples of the big bend for thousands of years! Now modern peoples are drawn to Big Bend Ranch State Park as a last frontier for dark sky exploration. Join a park ranger to learn some of the  constellation legends of the Big Bend Region.

Did you know? Big Bend Ranch State Park is a gold-tier International Dark Sky Park.

What to expect: Orientation,  star hopping, constellation identification, and stories of the night sky.

6:30pm - Presentation begins - arrive early and pick out a stargazing spot!
7:15pm - Open stargazing - bring your own telescope or binoculars and ask questions or just enjoy the dark skies!
8:30pm - Event ends

Meet at Fort Leaton State Historic Site. The program will take place in the Fort's adobe-walled and open-sky  "Corral" area behind the courtyard.  A park ranger will direct you to the appropriate location.

Bring your own blankets/chairs to watch the skies! Note: the ground is gravel and may be muddy if it has rained recently.

Bring flashlights but please do not use them after stargazing has begun. Red lights are permitted for limited use. The longer you let your eyes adjust the more stars you will see!

Fees: Adults 13 and older, $5; Children age 12 and under, free admission.  Hint: Reserve online in advance.

Please check weather and this page before leaving for the event, weather can change at the last minute.
