Camping 101 Class

Ready to start camping this fall? Join this Ranger-lead class for tips, tricks, and skills to make your trip a success!

Get ready for the fall camping season with a class teaching basic skills from setting up a tent to building a fire and cooking a meal. We will also give you tips for finding places to camp, camping safety, and leave no trace. 

Reservations required; to reserve your spot, call the office at (915) 444-9100.

Fee: $8.00 per adult 13 years of age and older, $3.00 for Texas State Park Pass holders, and $1.00 for children between the ages of 5 and 12. 

Bring: water, snacks, and comfortable clothes. We will provide all class materials needed. 

Optional: if you have any gear you would like to ask questions about, bring it with you! The Ranger leading the class can offer lots of suggestions for maintenance , repair, or use. 

 Meeting location: The Visitor Center in the Tom Mays Unit. When you enter Tom Mays, pull into the first parking lot to the right and go into the main visitor center to get your entrance permit. The event will be in the Interpretive building next door.

 Directions: From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left. 

From Eastside on Hwy 54, take exit 29 towards Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles through the mountains. Park entrance will be on the right.

If using a GPS be sure to search for "2900 Tom Mays Access Road," not "Franklin Mountains State Park."
