Follow up valentines day with quality outdoor time with the people you love most, family!

Reservations required; to reserve your spot, call the office at (915) 566-6441.

Come explore the beautiful Chihuahua desert on a guided hike with one of our park rangers or volunteers and bring a loved one! We won't draw the line at father and daughters either; all parents , guardians, children, mentors, and mentees are welcome to join us.

We will hike the Lower Sunset Shortcut #1 loop. This is a moderately difficult hike of 2.5 miles. After a steep initial descent down an old jeep road the tail transitions to a relatively well maintained trail that climbs up and out of the canyon, meandering around rock outcroppings before making its way back up. It ends with a slightly steeper climb up to the scenic overlook.

Bring: water, snacks, hiking boots/shoes, and comfortable clothes.

Optional: binoculars, hiking stick, camera, and a map.

Fee: $8 for adults 13 years old and up; $3 for Texas State Park Pass holders, and $1 for children 12 and under.

Directions:

  • From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards the mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left.
  • From Eastside on Hwy 54, take exit 29 towards Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles over/through the mountains. Park entrance will be on the right.
  • If using a GPS be sure to search for "Tom Mays Access Road," not "Franklin Mountains State Park."
