First Day Hike - Mundy's Gap
Wed, January 01, 2025
Let's start the New Year off on the right hiking foot! Join us to work up a sweat and burn some calories while taking in the splendors of the Franklin Mountains State Park. We will be hiking along a scenic trail up to Mundy's Gap - a moderate/difficult hike.
Length: 3.5 miles roundtrip
Trail difficulty: moderately difficult.
Begin with a gradual incline over scree, or rubble - challenging for some; then transition to a steady climb over loose rubble/rocks. Once you make it to the gap you are rewarded with sweeping views of the east side.
Fee: $5 park entrance fee 13 years old and up; free for Texas State Park Pass holders and Children 12 and under.
Bring: Water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes/boots. Optional: hiking stick, camera, binoculars, a map.
Meeting location: West Cottonwood Springs trailhead in the Tom Mays Unit. When you enter Tom Mays, stop by the Visitor Center and let the ranger on duty know you are part of the hike and pay the entry fee. Continue down the road and take the first right. The parking lot is at the end of the road.
Directions to the Tom Mays Unit:
From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left.
From Eastside on Hwy 54, take exit 29 towards Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles through the mountains. Park entrance will be on the right.
If using a GPS be sure to search for "2900 Tom Mays Access Road," not "Franklin Mountains State Park."
