(mostly) Full Moon Hike

Join the Franklin Mountains State Park Rangers exploring the vibrant night-life of the park by (mostly) full moon. *If weather conditions remain unfavorable, the Ranger will change the extent of the hike, or alter the location. Please bring appropriate clothing for the conditions*

We will meet at the southern trailhead for Lower Sunset trail to hike Upper Sunset trail, a 1.3 mile trail rated as easy+ in difficulty.

Bring: water, snacks, hiking boots/shoes, and comfortable clothes, and a flashlight with a red, green, black, or UV light setting. 

Don't bring: White lights, as this will interrupt your night vision. If you do not have a flashlight with a red light setting, you can find free red light apps for your phone. 

Optional: binoculars, hiking stick, camera, and a map.

Fee: $8 for adults 13 years old and up; $3 for Texas State Park Pass holders, and $1 for children 12 and under.


  • From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left. 
  • From Eastside on Hwy 54, take exit 29 towards Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles over/through the mountains. Park entrance will be on the right.
  • If using a GPS be sure to search for "Tom Mays Access Road," not "Franklin Mountains State Park."
