Native Bread Basket

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage month, take a step back in time and explore the different native plants that would have been used to make dietary staples before European wheat was introduced.

This cooking class explores the grains and other food staples that made up the "daily bread" of our ancestors here in the Chihuahuan Desert. Learn to make flour from different native plants and compare the taste of the baked goods to our modern versions. 

Reservations required; to reserve your spot, call the office at (915) 444-9100.

Fee: $8.00 per adult 13 years of age and older, $3.00 for Texas State Park Pass holders, and $1.00 for children between the ages of 5 and 12. 

Bring: a hunger for knowledge! 

Meeting location: The Visitor Center in the Tom Mays Unit. When you enter Tom Mays, pull into the first parking lot to the right and go into the main visitor center to get your entrance permit. The event will be in the Interpretive building next door.


From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left. 

From Eastside on Hwy 54, take exit 29 towards Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles through the mountains. Park entrance will be on the right.

If using a GPS be sure to search for "2900 Tom Mays Access Road," not "Franklin Mountains State Park."
