Join the Franklin Mountains Park Rangers and the Sun City Astronomers for an evening of night sky fun!

Meet us at the scenic overlook in the Tom Mays unit of Franklin Mountains to enjoy an evening of star gazing. We won't draw the line at stars though! We hope to get a good look at some of our neighbor planets also. July marks Mars’ closest approach to Earth in 15 years, so it is a good time for planet gazing!

See you there!

Bring: water, snacks, and a flashlight with a red, green, black, or UV light setting.

Don't bring: White lights, as this will interrupt your night vision. If you do not have a flashlight with a red light setting, you can find free red light apps for your phone.

Optional: folding chairs, binoculars, camera, and star charts.

Fee: $5 for adults 13 years old and up; $3 for Texas State Park Pass holders, and $1 for children 12 and under.

  • From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards the mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left.
  • From Eastside on Hwy 54, take exit 29 towards Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles over the mountains. Park entrance will be on the right.
  • If using a GPS be sure to search for "Tom Mays Access Road," not "Franklin Mountains State Park."

The park gate will close promptly at 8:30 p.m. so be sure to arrive a few minutes early to make sure you get in.
