Twilight Hike

Join the Franklin Mountains Rangers for an evening hike to explore the night life at Franklin Mountains State Park.

We will meet at the Northern trailhead for Upper Sunset trail to hike Lower Sunset trail shortcut #1, a 2.5 mile trail rated as moderately difficult. After a steep initial descent down old jeep road the trail transitions to relatively well maintained trail that climbs up and out of the canyon meandering around rock outcroppings before making its way back up. It ends with a slightly steeper climb up to the scenic overlook.

Reservations are required; to make you reservation, call (915) 566-6441 Monday through Friday. 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. 

Bring: water, snacks, hiking boots/shoes, comfortable clothes, and a flashlight with a red, green, black, or UV light setting. 

Optional: binoculars, hiking stick, camera, and a map.

Fee: $8 for adults 13 years old and up; $3 for Texas State Park Pass holders, and $1 for children between the ages of 5-12 years old.


  • From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards the mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left. 
  • From Eastside on Hwy 54, take exit 29 towards Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles over/through the mountains. Park entrance will be on the right.
  • If using a GPS be sure to search for "Tom Mays Access Road," not "Franklin Mountains State Park."
