Join us for an update on the 2026 City Nature Challenge (CNC) and learn helpful tips to make this year’s event a success. We’ll cover important changes, answer questions, and walk through how to use the iNaturalist app—both indoors and with a short practice session in the field.

What is iNaturalist? A free app that helps you explore nature, identify species, and share your observations. It’s perfect for anyone curious about the natural world or interested in becoming a citizen scientist.

What is the City Nature Challenge? A global, 96‑hour biodiversity project happening April 24–27, 2026. Cities around the world compete to document as many species as possible. Visit the CNC-San Antonio website for more information

Who can participate? Anyone. Join individually, form a team of six, or participate with a local organization.

Where to Meet:

Meet at the Exhibit Gallery, next to the Visitor Center.

How to Prepare:

To sign up, please email Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov before April 16th with the subject line: iNaturalist Training. This activity is limited to 40 people.

Saturdays can be very busy and there is sometimes a line at the Fee Booth. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.

Before arrival, be sure the free iNaturalist app is installed on your phone. Don't wait to do it at Government Canyon, as our wifi is pretty slow.

Dress comfortably for sitting outdoors. Bring water and a possibly a snack. You may want a notepad and pencil.

Accessibility:

This activity is wheelchair-friendly. There is a paved path leading from the parking lots to the Gallery and Visitor Center. The Gallery has a wooden floor. There is an accessible restroom nearby.

If other ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

Cancellation:

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
