Indigenous People, Plants and Animals

Take a walk with knowledgeable volunteers to explore the historical and present-day symbiotic relationship between native plants, animals and people in the Government Canyon area.

Who Is Invited:

Ages 10 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets, please. 

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time. 

Where to Meet:

Meet at the rainwater tower at the Visitor Center; closest parking will be Lot A or B. Our planned hike will be about 1.25 mile, on the Discovery trail.

Accessibility:

This activity is somewhat wheelchair-friendly. There is a paved path leading from the parking lots to the meeting location at the Visitor Center. The Discovery Trail has a crushed granite surface.

How to Prepare:

Registration is NOT required. Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, you can pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit. 

Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 32 oz of water per person.
