Family-Friendly Morning Hike

Start the new year with the Friends of Government Canyon for a leisurely hike at Government Canyon State Natural Area. 9AM – 11AM. We’ll hike the historic Joe Johnston Route from its trailhead to the turn-off for Wildcat Canyon Trail and return the same way. This hike is about 2 miles long and will have some slight elevation change with fairly rocky conditions.

Open to ages 6 years and up; no strollers please; no pets please. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

Dress for hiking outdoors; sunscreen and hat recommended. Wear sturdy footwear appropriate for rough trails (no sandals or open-toed footwear please); bring at least one (1) liter of water PER PERSON and a snack if you like.

Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event. Group size for this hike is limited to the first 15 individuals who register.

Though the program is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. Plan to arrive early as mornings can be very busy. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7AM; plan to be at the Visitor Center and ready to go no later than 8:45; the hike starts promptly at 9AM.
