First Day Beginner's Birding Outing

Start the New Year with some feathered friends!

Members of the Government Canyon Activities Committee welcome anyone interested in our feathered friends for a birding outing at the Natural Area on the first day of 2023.

8:00AM - 11:00AM.  No experience necessary, this is for beginners!

Learn about the fun and excitement of birding, including tips on using binoculars, cameras, field guides and sound recordings. Bring your own equipment or let us know if we can loan you a pair of binoculars when you make your reservation.

This outing will make use of a paved road and the accessible terrain adjacent to the road with a mild elevation gain along the way. Volunteers will meet you at the rainwater harvesting tower at the Visitor Center. Please dress for the weather and be prepared for sunny conditions - there will be limited cover on the road. Bring at least one liter of water and a snack if you like.

Group size is limited to 8 participants; participants must be at least 8 years of age or older; participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  Reservations are required; sorry, no group reservations. Reserve your spot online at

Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event.

PLEASE NOTE: Though the program is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply.

The Natural Area front gates open at 7:00AM; plan to be at the Visitor Center and ready to go no later than 7:45AM. The program starts promptly at 8:00AM.

The Natural Area can be very busy! To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth please reserve and PRINT OUT your Day Pass in advance by going to:

SPECIAL NOTE: Reserving a Day Pass is not the same as making a program reservation!

Birding outings may be cancelled due to severe weather conditions.
