Join dedicated volunteers for an informative and FUN hike at Government Canyon SNA.

This month’s First Saturday Hike is going to be extra special! Join us on a trip back in time with a short but beautiful hike to the historic Kallison Ranch complex. Not normally open to the public, you will be treated to some incredible scenic views while learning about one of Government Canyon’s founding families.

The hike is approximately 2.5 miles round trip over sections of moderately rough terrain. We will discuss how Texas was settled in the late 1800s and learn about the highly influential Kallison family and their legacy.

Hike is open to ages 10 and older. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

Registration is NOT required for this hike. Though the hike is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7AM and the hike begins promptly at 8AM. Plan to arrive early as Saturday mornings can be very busy. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass.

Meet at the rainwater harvesting tower at the Visitor Center.

Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and a snack.

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.
