Intro to Hiking: For Women Only

A special program just for women.

Want to wander through the beautiful Texas Hill Country, but unsure how to begin? Interested in hiking through nature but have only trekked sidewalks and H-E-B aisles? Looking for a chupacabra? This event is for YOU!

Join us for a women-only introduction to hiking. 10AM – Noon. Absolutely ZERO experience required – in fact encouraged! Learn the basics of how to prepare and what to expect, but most importantly you will enjoy a short and easy hike (1.5 miles, flat gravel trail, mostly shaded). Hike guides will identify native plants, search for animals like armadillo and endangered birds, and discuss 10,000+ years of human inhabitation right here in Bexar County. After the hike will be a presentation with a Q&A session should you want to learn even more.

This special hike is limited to the first 15 ladies who register: ages 12 and older; minors must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian; no pets please. Participants should be able to walk on flat gravel trails. Dress for the weather; wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes (hiking boots or sneakers – please no sandals or flip-flops), bring sun protection and at least 1 liter of water per person.

Reservations required! Reserve your spot at https://friendsofgovernmentcanyon.org/events?view=calendar&month=12-2022

Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event. Sorry, no group registrations.

Though the hike is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. Plan to arrive early as Sunday mornings can be very busy. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7AM and the hike begins promptly at 10AM. Meet at the rainwater harvesting tower at the Visitor Center.

To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please reserve your Day Pass here: https://texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/government-canyon-state-natural-area/r/deDetails.do?contractCode=TX&parkId=1200058

SPECIAL NOTE: Reserving a Day Pass is not the same as making a program reservation!

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.
