Feral swine are the United States’ most abundant free-ranging introduced ungulate. In the last 500 years the population in the United States has increased to an estimated 6.9 million, with approximately 2.6 million residing in Texas alone. In 2007 it was estimated that Americans spent $1.5 billion annually on feral swine population control and damage mitigation. With populations estimated to continue to grow, the costs of feral swine damage and control will grow as well. John Kinsey will be joining us here at Lockhart State Park at 10:00 AM on February 8th to discuss feral swine ecology and management. John is a Lockhart native and the lead research biologist at Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Feral Swine Research Facility located on the Kerr Wildlife Management Area. Meet at the Lockhart State Park Recreation Hall.
