Join the Longleaf Master Naturalists for the Great Texas Birding Classic birding tournament

Birders standing on a boardwalkDid you know that bird watching could be competitive? Join our local Master Naturalist team at Martin Dies, Jr. State Park to spot different birds for the 2019 Great Texas Birding Classic. It’s described as “the world’s biggest, longest and wildest bird watching tournament”, but is essentially a friendly competition to see how many birds can be identified. If you’ve never tried bird watching this is a great introduction, and you can start your very own bird life list.

To join in the fun, all you have to do is show up at the observation bridge on the Walnut Ridge Unit of Martin Dies, Jr. State Park for the official “BIG SIT” on Saturday May 4th between the times of 7am-11am or 4pm-8pm. Park fees apply, $4 for adults, kids 12 and under play for free.

“Come out and discover what birds call the Pineywood forests home. With each species of bird you identify you’re helping science get a better idea of what birds live in the area. When you’re done bird watching, enjoy the recreational opportunities of the park by hiking, paddling, cycling, or picnicking” says Amy Kocurek, park interpreter.

This Great Birding Classic has been held for the past 20 years, but with the completion of the Texas Birding Trails in 2013, the Texas State Parks began to host this event to get the public more involved. The park’s team is run by the Longleaf Ridge master naturalists. For more information call the park at (409)384-5231.
