Explore the sloughs and lake, and discover all about local flora and fauna. We'll travel a shorter distance on this trip so it is friendly for beginners!
The Beginners Guided Paddling Trip is a great opportunity to practice paddling before committing to a longer experience. In this program we will discuss boating safety, how to get in and out of the boat and basic paddling strokes.
When: 2pm
Where: Meet at the Walnut Slough Day Use area in the Walnut Ridge Unit.
Bring: Water shoes, appropriate attire, plenty of water, sunscreen. Be prepared for your shoes, clothes, and belongings to get wet.
How to rent a canoe or kayak: Arrive about 15 minutes before the program. Pay for your rental at Headquarters (Hen House Ridge Unit). HQ will issue you a life vest, paddle, and assign a boat. Then head over to the Walnut Slough Day Use Area (Walnut Ridge Unit) and look for your assigned boat. Return life vest and paddle to HQ when finished.
Cost: Entrance to the park requires the purchase of a $4 day pass or a Texas State Park Pass. Children 12 and under are free. Park Passes do not cover the cost of rental boats. Call HQ for rental prices (409) 384-5231
Reminder: There are no restrooms near the launch so plan accordingly. This program is weather dependent and may be canceled if conditions are unfavorable. Keep in mind that even though these are guided opportunities, you participate at your own risk.
