A 600 mile roadtrip in 1690… sounds like fun!

Join Ranger Jared in looking through a window to our state’s rich past. Many of us have seen and treasure the CCC built Commemorative Mission, but how many of us know the story of the original building that inspired it?

  • Learn why the Spanish travelled all the way to deep east Texas to start their missionary efforts in the lands that would become our state!
  • Like any happy accident, a number of unlikely and unbelievable things set into motion this long and grueling journey of the Spanish up to and into the Pineywoods.
  • This presentation and guided tour will help you go back in time and experience a story of exploration, perseverance, conflict, and legacy.
  • Feel free to ask questions and share your connection to the history of the area and the state.
  • After the presentation those that wish to can accompany Ranger Jared on a short, easy hike to some of the areas of the park that help tell this tale in its entirety--- including the San Pedro Creek and a real section of the original El Camino Real!

Meet at the Mission. Participants may want to bring water, bug spray, appropriate clothing and footwear for the outdoors, and a time machine if you have one!

***Attendance to this event is open to the public and free after regular day use or camping fees.
