Kayaking 101

Want to learn the basics of kayaking? In this two-hour program we will learn to paddle in the safe environment of Fish Pass where the water is only about 24-36".

We provide the kayak, paddle, life jacket and instructions. Minimum age and size is 8 years old/80 pounds with adult participation. We have 4 tandem and 3 single sit-on-top kayaks. Sign up required @

  • Sunscreen, hat, water bottle, sunglasses recommended. 
  • The program is about two hours and depending on weather and energy of the group will be about 1.5 miles round trip
  • No flip flops please, sandals with heel straps are acceptable but closed-toe shoes preferred
  • Group meets at Headquarters parking ( lot at 9:45am before driving across the street to the Fish Pass launch area
  • The road to the launch area is a dirt road and sometimes has potholes and ruts, some low-profile vehicles may not be suitable. 
  • Entry fee to the park is $5/person, 12 and under free.  Texas State Park Pass holders entry is FREE.  There is no additional fee for the program.
  • Pre-purchased day passes are highly encouraged to ensure access to the park:
  • Be prepared to get wet and or muddy
  • Please provide the number of participants and ages as well as  a cell phone number in your email registration for weather related cancellations,  your confirmation will be returned via email within a couple of days
  • Program is subject to cancellation for weather or if no participants sign up
