Kerr WMA: Deer Research Projects

The Use of Selective Breeding to Affect Phenotypic Antler Characteristics in White-tailed Deer

Whitetail Antler Whitetail Antler

(This project would be an expansion of the current pilot project involving selection for typical 10 point antler frames.) A comparison study investigating antler development of progeny from males exhibiting 5X5 typical-frame antlers to progeny from sires exhibiting 4X4 typical frame antlers. If antler point number can be improved through selective harvest of an existing herd, it would reduce the need of managers to introduce deer from other sources.
