10th Annual School Archery Championship Draws Record 1,600 Kids, 63 Schools to Belton March 4-5

AUSTIN – From 63 schools across Texas, 1,664 students in grades 4-12 will gather March 4-5 at the Bell County Expo Center for the 10th annual Texas-National Archery in the Schools Tournament and Scholarship Championship. Eggheads to Thrill Tastebuds at Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center April 11

ATHENS — Local lore has it that the hamburger as we know it was invented by an Athens resident, Fletcher (“Old Dave”) Davis, at his Athens café in the 1880s and introduced to the world at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. A reporter for the New York Tribune wrote from the fair of a new sandwich called a hamburger, “the innovation of a food vendor on the pike.” While the food vendor was never named, enough evidence existed that the person was none other than Fletcher Davis of Athens, Texas, that the 80th Texas Legislature adopted a resolution naming Athens as “the Original Home of the Hamburger.”

TPWD Proposing Changes to Turkey Hunting Regulations

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is considering closing spring eastern turkey hunting in 11 East Texas counties, restructure the season in two other counties and extend the youth-only fall turkey season. The recommendations are among a brief slate of proposed turkey hunting regulation changes for 2015.

TPWD Proposing Adjustments to Bass and Gar Fishing Regulations; Commercial Crab and Finfish Rules

AUSTIN —Fisheries staff with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are considering adjustments to bass length limits on several lakes, a change in alligator gar bag limit on Falcon Lake and clarifications to commercial crab and finfish rules.

Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame To Induct Famed Angler, Conservation Organization

ATHENS—The angler who caught the first entry into Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s ground-breaking big bass angler recognition program and the organization responsible for Texas having a year-around rainbow trout fishery will be inducted into the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in June.
