Head to Texas State Parks for Free Fishing

AUSTIN, Texas — Parents looking to save a few dollars by vacationing closer to home this summer might consider taking their youngsters to a nearby Texas state park, where they can try their luck at hooking a fish or two without worrying about needing a fishing license to do so. And, if you’re looking for how-to instruction and structured activities for your young angler, or simply want to brush up on your own fishing skills, more than a dozen state parks this summer are hosting special family fishing events.

Deadly 2008 Boating Season Prompts Expanded Public Outreach

AUSTIN, Texas — In 2008, 61 boaters died on Texas waters. It was the highest number in more than a decade, tying the tragic 2002 boating season. Even more alarming, in 2002 there were more than 620,000 registered vessels in the state; six years later that number had fallen to just slightly more than 591,000.

Healthy Habitat Grants Available for Texas Schools

AUSTIN, Texas — The call is going out to public and private/nonprofit middle and high schools across the state: Texas Healthy Habitats Grants of up to $15,000 are now available from the Texas Center for Service-Learning, with applications due June 19. The grants will support students doing service-learning projects to benefit wildlife and the environment, made possible with a donation from EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation.

Outdoor Service Projects Funded in Latest Round of CO-OP Grants

AUSTIN, Texas — State and local parks will be the beneficiaries of outdoor service projects thanks to grants recently awarded to organizations around the state. The Community Outdoor Outreach Program (CO-OP) grant awards up to $50,000 to groups that are introducing participants to environmental education programs while allowing them to get outside and have a little fun camping, fishing, kayaking and more.
