Old Freighter Sunk to Give Gulf Marine Life a New Hangout

PORT ARANSAS – The 155-foot Kinta S slipped to her watery grave Wednesday in the Gulf of Mexico off shore from Mustang Island, but the nearly 40-year-old freighter will foster new marine life for years to come.

Texas Buffalo Soldiers to Salute Civil War Medal Recipient

AUSTIN — Sgt. Maj. Milton M. Holland, the first Texas recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, will be honored posthumously on Sept. 27 at the Texas Capitol. The ceremony, being presented by the Texas Buffalo Soldiers in partnership with the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday on the south steps of the Capitol with a posting of colors by TPWD’s buffalo soldiers.

Coastwide Seagrass Rule Anniversary Signals Hope for Vital Resource

AUSTIN — This month marks the one-year anniversary of a law passed by the 83rd Texas Legislature prohibiting the uprooting of seagrass with the propeller of a boat within the coastal waters of Texas. Seagrasses are important as they stabilize sediments, decrease erosion, improve water quality and clarity, increase dissolved oxygen, and provide integral habitat for recreationally and commercially important species, such as red drum, black drum, and spotted seatrout.

TPWD Grants Extension on Caddo Lake WMA Duck Blinds

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is extending the time frame allowing hunters to use maintained permanent duck blind structures through the 2015-16 waterfowl season on the Caddo Lake Wildlife Management Area.

Fall Camping Workshops Announced for Outdoor Families

AUSTIN – With cool weather around the corner, the Texas Outdoor Family program has scheduled outdoor recreational workshops statewide though the beginning of December. The workshops offer a low-cost weekend trip where families can un-plug, reconnect with nature, and learn the basics of camping.
