Texas State Parks Share Six Tips for Staying Safe on the Trails

AUSTIN— As we enter the summer months, Texans are heading to Texas State Parks to enjoy time outdoors. Last year, 43 state parks reported 102 heat-related illnesses in humans and pets. Since January 1, 54 heat-related incidents have already been reported, compared to 34 reported by this time last year.

AUSTIN — Al entrar en los meses del verano, los tejanos estarán visitando los Parques Estatales de Texas para disfrutar el tiempo en la naturaleza.  El año pasado, 43 parques estatales reportaron 102 casos de enfermedades relacionadas con el calor en humanos y en mascotas.  Desde el 1 de enero a la fecha ya se han reportado 54 incidentes relacionados con el calor, comparado con los 34 que fueron reportados para este momento el año pasado. Al dispararse las temperaturas hasta los tres dígitos, el Departamento de Parques y Vida Silvestre de Texas está compartiendo sus sugerencias para mantenerse seguros al estar al aire libre.

Galveston Island State Park Reopens June 27 After Beachside Renovations

GALVESTON— Galveston Island State Park is reopening the beachside of the park on June 27 after completing a major redevelopment project which began in the summer of 2019. The Galveston Island State Park Beach Redevelopment project was brought to fruition thanks to $10.6 million in Deepwater Horizon Natural Resources Damage Assessment (NRDA) Phase III Early Restoration funds from the Texas Trustees.

Applications Being Accepted for Bird City Texas Program

AUSTIN – Audubon Texas and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), partners in the Bird City Texas program (BCT), are now accepting applications from communities that wish to receive Bird City Texas certification.  Now in its fourth year, the program recognizes the contributions that communities make to improve nature in and around where people live, work and play.

TPWD Executive Director Carter Smith Announces Retirement

AUSTIN—Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Executive Director Carter Smith announced today he will retire effective January 2023, ending a nearly 15-year tenure that strengthened private-lands stewardship, expanded state parks and wildlife management areas, bolstered conservation, law enforcement, and park funding, and brought a renewed focus on connecting Texans young and old with the state’s natural resources.

Retired Florida Largemouth Bass Broodfish Headed to Rio Grande Valley Community Fishing Lakes

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Inland Fisheries Division will stock several retired Florida largemouth bass broodfish into three Rio Grande Valley community fishing lakes in June. Dean Porter Park Resaca in Brownsville, Town Lake at Fireman’s Park in McAllen and the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse Channel in Hidalgo will receive these special fish.

“Bowhunter By Fall” Aims to Prepare Archers for Fall Hunting Season

AUSTIN – Texans desiring to harvest their own meals, improve on or a learn a new skill and take part in outdoor adventures can do just that through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Community Archery Program. “Bowhunter by Fall” is a series of monthly and bi-monthly e-newsletters filled with videos and clips, giving archers the skills to travel from behind the keyboard to behind the bow just in time for the fall hunting season.

Texas Game Wardens See Reduction in Citations During Memorial Day Weekend

AUSTIN – Texas Game Wardens issued fewer boating-related citations over Memorial Day weekend than they did in 2021. They cited increased boating safety awareness and patrols by game wardens and other marine safety officers as contributors to a drop in incidents.
