Big Time Texas Hunts Winners Announced

AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has selected the winners of this year’s Big Time Texas Hunts.  The winners were selected in a random drawing from 145,585 entries and the 14 lucky individuals have been notified.

Free Entrance to Texas State Parks Nov. 14 in Honor of Veterans Day

Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center to Host Veteran’s Day Event

ATHENS — The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is pleased to announce a new event to honor and support veterans. “Veterans Day at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center” will be held from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, with free admission for veterans and their families.

Ducks Unlimited and TPWD Partner for Wetlands Enhancement Project at Richland Creek WMA

AUSTIN – Corporate and conservation partners are coming together to enhance wetlands on Richland Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) to improve wildlife habitat and water resources in the Trinity River Basin.

Ray Roberts Lake State Park Reopens Highway 380 Entrance to Greenbelt Unit

DENTON— Ray Roberts Lake State Park will be reopening the Highway 380 access point to the Greenbelt Unit at 8 a.m., Oct. 27. This will reopen about four miles of multi-use trail and allow for hiking, biking, and equestrian access. The kayak launch and designated equestrian trailhead at the highway 380 access point will remain closed until further notice.

Waterfowl Hunters Play Key Role in Helping Prevent Spread of Invasive Species

AUSTIN – Waterfowl hunters are gearing up across the state in anticipation of opening day. In an effort to avoid spreading invasive species like giant salvinia and zebra mussels, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is reminding waterfowl hunters to clean, drain and dry their boats and equipment, including decoys and other hunting gear, before traveling from lake to lake.

Texas State Parks Offer Up a Frightfully Good Time for Halloween

AUSTIN – Ghouls and goblins of all ages are invited to a variety of family-friendly Halloween-themed events at state parks across Texas that are guaranteed to provide a witchy good time. Activities range from educational conversations on creepy crawlies and nocturnal animals to pumpkin scavenger hunts along park trails. Biologists Predict an Exceptional 2021-22 General White-Tailed Deer Season

AUSTIN – Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologists say hunters can expect an exceptional 2021-22 white-tailed deer season. The statewide white-tailed deer population is estimated to be around 5.4 million deer and while it is down slightly from previous years, fawn recruitment (fawn survival rates) predictions indicate an overall robust population increase headed into the season.

Halloween at the Hatchery Returns to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center Oct. 28

ATHENS – The East Texas family tradition continues October 28 when “Halloween at the Hatchery” returns to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center after being cancelled in 2020 due to the public health crisis. The annual event provides a safe place to go trick-or-treating while raising money for three local beneficiaries, The Rainbow Room, East Texas Crisis Center and the Athens High School Fishing Team.
