TPWD to Offer Project WILD/Growing Up WILD Workshop in Spanish

Combination workshop in Spanish is first of its kind

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will be holding a combination Project WILD/Growing Up WILD workshop in Spanish for the first time in the program’s 24-year history.

The workshop, which is free and open to the public, will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 8 at Eisenhower Park in San Antonio. Previously, Project WILD volunteers have conducted the workshops in English and provided a written supplement of some of the activities in Spanish to educators who were interested.

This workshop in Spanish will be the first of what Kiki Corry, TPWD Project WILD coordinator, said she hopes will become a regular offering from the program.

“We hope it catches on and spreads,” she said.

Corry said bilingual volunteers who conduct the Project WILD workshops can offer the workshops in either English or Spanish. She said volunteers in East Texas and in the Valley have also expressed interest in providing Project WILD workshops in Spanish.

Project WILD is an environmental and conservation education program designed for students from kindergarten through the twelfth grade that emphasizes awareness, appreciation and understanding of wildlife and natural resources. The program engages children with fun, hands-on activities to teach them how to think about wildlife, not what to think, and develops their critical-thinking skills.

Project WILD workshops train educators and anyone else who is interested in sharing wildlife with children. As an interdisciplinary program, Project WILD can also be used to teach a variety of subjects such as science, social studies, language arts, math, art, music and physical education.

In August 2009, TPWD introduced Growing Up WILD, a program similar to Project WILD that is aimed at educating preschool children about wildlife issues.
