ATHENS—The Bluegill Family Fishing Tournament at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) September 29 isn’t about the prizes, it’s about families spending time together outdoors. But when spending time outdoors revolves around fishing, families have more options if they own a fishing boat.

That’s what inspired Wulf Outdoor Sports and the makers of the Bass Hunter line of boats to offer an entry-level boat as a door prize for entrants in the upcoming bluegill tournament.

Suitable for use on small bodies of water, the Bass Hunter EX is a 9-foot, 6-inch rotationally molded two-person boat weighing only 135 pounds, making it transportable atop a car or in a pickup truck. It can be powered by a trolling motor or other motor up to 5 horsepower.

The prize package will include a Motorguide trolling motor, making the value of the prize approximately $1,200. The boat will be on display at Wulf Outdoor Sports in Athens until September 28.

Everyone who registers for the tournament will be entered into the drawing for the boat. The drawing will be held following the tournament weigh-in at the Anglers Pavilion at TFFC at 2:30 p.m.

Numerous other prize packages will be awarded, including an X-Box 360 with game, fishing equipment and gift cards from local businesses. More than $3,000 in prizes will be awarded. You must be present to win any prize, including the boat.

Pre-registration for the tournament is required; you must register before fishing. Registration forms for the tournament are available at Wulf Outdoor Sports, by calling (903) 670-2222 or by download at http://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/nonpwdforms/media/bluegill_flyer.doc. Teams may also register the day of the tournament beginning at 7:00 a.m. at TFFC.

Mail registration must be received by Wednesday, September 26.

A $15 entry fee per team will be charged. Checks should be made payable to Friends of TFFC. The entry fee includes admission to TFFC. Fishing will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the weigh-in at the Anglers Pavilion at TFFC at 2:30.

Sponsors of the event include: Wulf Outdoor Sports, Lake Athens Property Owners Association, Aaron’s Sales and Lease Ownership, Best Western Royal Mountain Inn, Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites—Athens, WalMart Supercenter of Athens, Chicken Express, First State Bank, Lake Fork Trophy Lures and Brookshire’s Grocery. Brookshire’s will provide free bottled water to contestants.

Teams must consist of one adult 18 years of age or older and one child under 18 years of age. Each team can weigh in a maximum of four fish. Multiple teams can fish from the same boat, making it possible for both parents to partner with different children and still fish as a family. Team members are not required to be related.

Teams may choose to fish either on Lake Athens, which is adjacent to TFFC, or in TFFC’s ponds and streams, some of which have been stocked with bluegills.
