Volunteers Needed for Bastrop State Park Reforestation Efforts

BASTROP—Bastrop State Park is seeking volunteers to help plant loblolly pines from mid-December through early February.in an ongoing effort restore the park after the devastating 2011 wildfire.

This is the third year the park has hosted volunteer reforestation opportunities following the 2011 Bastrop County Complex Wildfire. The wildfire affected 96 percent of Bastrop State Park, and volunteers are needed to plant thousands of trees this winter. The work will begin in December and last through February, with volunteers and contractors anticipated to plant 500,000 trees.

"We are looking forward to working with volunteers again for the third year of pine restoration at the park,” says Jamie Hackett, superintendent of Bastrop State Park. “The task is an important one and we have such a good time doing it."

Nineteen workdays are scheduled, including public, group, and volunteer days for students from Texas A&M University. Volunteer donors and school groups also have days reserved.

Individuals, families and small groups are welcome to register for the public workdays.

Larger groups (20-50 people) may register for a group workday with Mick Haven, Bastrop State Park Volunteer Coordinator.

Each workday begins at 8 a.m. and lasts until noon.

The public workdays will be Dec. 14, Jan. 17 and Feb. 7. Group days are Dec. 20, Jan. 24, 25 and 31, and Feb. 8.
