Planning Firm Hired for Galveston Island State Park Redevelopment

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has hired MESA Design Group of Dallas to lead a master planning and design team that will guide redevelopment of hurricane-ravaged Galveston Island State Park. TPWD also is asking stakeholders to provide their opinions and ideas regarding future park development via a Web survey.

Land Purchase Okay Will Expand Garner State Park

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission today gave the go-ahead for the purchase of a 113.5-acre tract of ranch land contiguous to the southern boundary of Garner State Park in Uvalde County.

New Texas State Parks Director Named

AUSTIN — Brent Leisure, a 26-year veteran of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, has been named director of Texas State Parks. A regional parks director for almost seven years, Leisure will assume his new duties as leader of the agency’s State Parks Division effective Sept. 1.

Rehabilitated Birds from BP Oil Spill Released at Goose Island State Park

AUSTIN – Twenty wild brown pelicans rehabilitated after exposure to the BP oil spill were transported from Louisiana by plane and released at Goose Island State Park near Rockport around 12:30 p.m. today, the first release of spill-rehabbed birds at a Texas state park.

Full Slate of Repair Projects to Commence at Bastrop State Park

BASTROP — A host of major repair and renovation projects are set to start Aug. 1 at Bastrop State Park, and while the park will remain open for day use and overnight stays, some cabins and campsites will be temporarily unavailable during construction.

Bats, Birds and Biking: Kickapoo Cavern State Park Now Open

BRACKETTVILLE, Texas – Visitors from as far away as Houston, Austin and San Antonio came out to enjoy the day’s free activities at the grand opening of Kickapoo Cavern State Park on Saturday, marking the first day the park is open for full public access for recreation and overnight camping, after more than 20 years of limited public visitation.
