Increased Black Bear Activity Observed in Trans-Pecos Region

AUSTIN— Once considered to be extinct in Texas, black bears have steadily recolonized the Big Bend region and other areas of west and southwest Texas since the last decade of the twentieth century. The natural restoration of populations in west Texas has recently resulted in bears being spotted in more populated areas. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists say the dry spring weather conditions have left bears on the move in search in food leading to an increase in sightings in the area.

Texas Hunting and Fishing License, Boat Registration Offices Open for Appointments Only

AUSTIN— Starting June 1, all Texas Parks and Wildlife Department law enforcement offices statewide and the license and registration office at the Austin headquarters will reopen to customers with appointments. Social distancing, face coverings and other public health measures will be mandatory for all customers.

Texas Game Wardens Put Wraps on Busy Memorial Day Weekend Boating Safety Effort

AUSTIN – Thousands of Texans headed out to lakes, rivers and coastal bays to celebrate Memorial Day weekend, and Texas Game Wardens were out in force to ensure everyone stayed safe on the water. Game wardens conducted safety checks on more than 9,000 vessels across the state between Friday and Monday.

Sea Center Texas, Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center to Partially Re-Open Wednesday, May 27

AUSTIN- With Texas gradually re-opening, Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens will partially re-open to public visitation on Wednesday, May 27. Both facilities will have enhanced safety measures that comply with CDC guidelines and Governor Abbott’s executive orders.

With Waterways Busy, Fatalities Up, Boating Safety Urged Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

AUSTIN – In 2019, 36 boating fatalities, and multiple boat accidents and injuries occurred on Texas waters. In conjunction with National Safe Boating Week May 16-22, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is reminding Texans to be safe this Memorial Day weekend and all summer long by following the law and taking basic safety precautions while on the water.
