Gulf Shrimp Season Closes May 15

AUSTIN- The Gulf of Mexico commercial shrimp season for both Texas and federal waters will close 30 minutes after sunset on Monday, May 15, 2023until a still-to-be determined date in July. While the statutory opening date for the gulf season is July 15, the Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will be sampling shrimp populations this summer to determine the optimum opening date.

Centennial Photo Exhibit Honors El Paso’s Three State Parks

EL PASO – As Texas State Parks celebrate 100 years, the International Museum of Art in El Paso will highlight the occasion with a photo exhibit June 3–23. “The Land That Shaped Us: Stories at Texas State Parks” will showcase artistic vintage and modern images of the state parks in El Paso: Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site, Franklin Mountains State Park and Wyler Aerial Tramway State Park.

First Photo Contest Winner Chosen; ‘Joys of Spring’ Is New Theme

AUSTIN — The Texas State Parks Centennial Photo Contest kicked off with a bang with more than 3,000 entries in the first round. The winning photo of winter’s “New Year, New Adventure” theme — a selfie of a happy human pileup (topped by an adorable dog) in a tent — was taken by Jayanthi Murahari. The winners of the four seasonal themes will be entered into the grand prize drawing at the end of the year. A public vote will determine the winner from the finalists.
