Possum Kingdom Delivers First Two February ShareLunkers

ATHENS – Possum Kingdom claimed the first two Legacy Class largemouth bass of the month Saturday, February 12. Steven Davis of Burkburnett, Texas reeled in ShareLunker 615 that morning, which weighed in at 13.20 pounds, followed by Randy Palmer of Arlington, Texas with 13.38-pound ShareLunker 616 later that night. These two Legacy Lunkers bring the 2022 Toyota ShareLunker season total to eight after six came in during the opening month of January.

TPWD Sets Public Meetings to Gather Input on Oyster Reef Closures

AUSTIN- The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is seeking public input on a proposed regulation change to prohibit the harvest of oysters in Carlos Bay, Mesquite Bay and Ayres Bay (Mesquite Bay complex). By closing the Mesquite Bay complex to oyster harvest, ecologically sensitive and unique oyster habitat would be protected.

All-Time Fishing Great to be Inducted into Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame

ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame committee is pleased to announce that professional angler Gary Klein of Mingus, Texas will be inducted into the hall of fame in 2022. Klein has been an anchor in professional fishing for 42-years and an innovator on the cutting edge of the sport. Additionally, Klein generously gives back to the fishing community through volunteer work with kids and military veterans.

TPWD Launches Prize Giveaway for Tagged Guadalupe Bass in Lower Colorado River

 AUSTIN – Grab a rod and reel and head to Central Texas for a chance to catch one of 30 tagged Guadalupe bass and possibly win a prize. From February 4 until August 31, any angler who catches one of the tagged Guadalupe bass from the Lower Colorado River near Austin and Smithville will be awarded a prize package and be entered into grand prize drawings at the end of the seven-month period.

O.H. Ivie Caps Off Successful January for Toyota ShareLunker Program

ATHENS – O.H. Ivie reservoir produced another Legacy Class largemouth bass to close out the first month of the 2022 Toyota ShareLunker season. Brett Cannon of Willis, Texas, who reeled in ShareLunker 593 in 2021, got back on the board Thursday Jan. 27 to become the second angler this season to catch a Legacy Lunker in back-to-back campaigns. Josh Jones, who caught two Lunkers a year ago, brought 14.13-pound ShareLunker 612 into his boat earlier in the month.

Quagga Mussels Detected for First Time in a Texas Reservoir

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) reports that invasive quagga mussels have been detected for the first time in Texas. The quagga mussel discovery was made by National Park Service (NPS) staff at the International Amistad Reservoir in the Rio Grande basin along the Texas-Mexico border near Del Rio.

20th Anniversary for Texas Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Program

AUSTIN —This February marks 20 years for the Texas Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Program. Every year countless volunteers spend 10 days on the water searching the Texas bays and shorelines for abandoned crab traps. When left in the water, these crab traps foul shrimpers’ nets, snag anglers’ lines, “ghost fish,” and create unsightly views. To date, they’ve hauled off more than 40,000 of these derelict traps.

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is closing TX-30 in Aransas Bay to commercial and recreational oyster harvest beginning at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022.

MATHIS – Saturday, Jan. 29, park rangers at Lake Corpus Christi State Park are hosting their Kid Fish 2022 event as an opportunity for young anglers to learn how to fish and to enjoy the wonders of outdoor recreation.
