After Ike, East Texas National Forest WMAs Reopened

AUSTIN, Texas — Because of Hurricane Ike, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department previously announced closure of public hunting activities by Annual Public Hunting Permit on several national forests that contain state wildlife management areas, which have since reopened.

Time Running Out to Enter Big Time Texas Hunts

AUSTIN, Texas -The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is reminding Texas hunters to enter this year’s Big Time Texas Hunts by the October 15th deadline. Winners will be called before the end of October to give them time to make their hunting trip preparations.

Texas Bighorn Sheep Numbers Continue to Climb

AUSTIN, Texas -The last wild desert bighorn sheep in Texas was seen in a remote area of far West Texas a half century ago, in October 1958. That might have been the last chapter for the majestic animal in the Lone Star State, but today, thanks to ongoing efforts to restore this majestic game animal in far West Texas, there are more sheep than you can shake a stick at with numbers unseen since the late 1800s.

TPWD Conducts Dove Research to Test Shot Effectiveness

AUSTIN, Texas — While Texas hunters were dusting off shotguns and stocking up on ammunition in advance of the Sept. 1 dove season opener in most of Texas, a research team was out two days prior to the season collecting bird specimens for a research study on the effectiveness of various shotshells, including non-lead shot.

Annual Texas Parks & Wildlife Expo Set for Oct. 4-5

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Parks & Wildlife Expo continues to add new activities while sticking to a hands-on, expert-assisted formula that has made it the largest free event of its kind in the nation.
